In a recent video, I used a piece of 4" X 4" Designer Series Paper (DSP). Thinking about getting 9 pieces that size from one sheet of 12" X 12", I challenged myself to come up with 9 ways to use a 4" X 4". Let me tell you, it WAS a challenge. But near the end the ideas kept coming! So, I offer you 9+ ways to use a 4" X 4" piece of patterned paper.
I did not use just 1 piece of 12" X 12", but most of these cards were made using the Lovely & Beautiful Specialty DSP. It was first released in the January - April 2026 catalog. It is still currently available as an Online Exclusive.
I only have the paper, so I used a variety of other coordinating products like floral stamps and embellishments with gold because of the gold accents in the paper.
On to my 9+ ideas for a 4" X 4" piece of paper. This could be DSP, a stamped piece of cardstock, vellum, etc. Before this challenge, I prefered using 3" X 3", but once I got going.....
- Cut the middle of the square and flip it over to create your focal point. If the 2 sides don't coordinate, cut 2 squares at the same time and create 2 cards.
One of the few here that I used a different Designer Series Paper. In this case, Paper Medley. - Cut your square on the diagonal, point to point twice, then flip 2 of the 4 pieces. Again, if the A and B sides, don't work together, cut 2 squares.
For this card, I put it on a gatefold card. It's a little busy for my taste, with so many patterns. Next time I would put cardstock on the 2 card panels instead. - Cut the piece into 4 pieces of 4" X 1". I have 2 cards here. The masculine card shows the strips around the edges. If I had put my focal piece in the center, it would have looked like an Old Olive layer. I great way to 'create a layer' if you only have 4" X 4" of the piece and not a full 4" X 5-1/4" piece.
- Cut the square into 4 pieces of 2" X 2". Here I adhered them to a piece of vellum then embossed the whole piece, like a quilt.
For this card, I used Homemade Sweetness Designer Series Paper. - Again, using 2 pieces of 4" X 4", just use scissors and create an interesting edge and use the top and bottom of different patterns. OR just separate the 2 pieces on your card (top/bottom or left/right, depending on your layout).
- Do a One Sheet Wonder (OSW) with your 4" X 4". We usually think of using 12" X 12" or 6" X 6", but why not a 4" X 4"? Here I cut 1" off, then cut the 3" X 4" into 2 pieces of 3" X 2". The patterns on the 2 sides did coordinate on this piece, so I flipped the 1" strip in the middle.
- A 4" X 4" piece makes a great layer on a bookbinding card!
Cut cardstock 4-1/4" X 11", score at 4-1/4" and 5-1/2". Fold in half and adhere the 1-1/4" section by the fold to create the bookbinding. - Cut in half on the diagonal and put each piece in a corner.
- I was thinking Out of the Box on this one! I scored by 4" X 4" at 2", then cut it in 2 the other direction. I used these pieces as hinges for my card! You could put the hinges on the outside or inside of your card. The front and back of my card was more DSP with cardstock to layers make the card more sturdy. So fun! I'll be doing this one agian!! Great use of those larger pieces that you want to highlight.
- BONUS: Use the 4" X 4" to create a tag or 2!
- BONUS: Just use it as a layer for a smaller piece of cardstock or DSP.
My video later today (June 15, 2026) highlights all of these cards and I demonstrate how to cut a few of the more tricky ones. I hope you'll look for that video on my Facebook page or on my YouTube channel.
(After my videos post, I'll try to remember to just put a link right here for you.)
I'd love to see your creations using a 4" X 4" piece of paper!--Sue
